1500 PIPERS AND DRUMMERS FROM NORTHERN IRELAND START ROAD TO THE WORLDS
Today almost 1500 pipers and drummers - that’s 40 pipe bands - from all over Northern Ireland will set off on their Road To The Worlds to compete at the Olympics of piping competitions - The World Pipe Band Championships (Saturday 13th August). Cottown Pipe Band kicked off proceedings by piping while boarding an easyJet flight to Glasgow.
Northern Ireland was invaded by Scottish pipe bands last weekend as the European Pipe Band Championships took place - the last big challenge ahead of The Worlds. Taking place at Glasgow Green, this year the Worlds will see over 200 pipe bands from around the globe compete for the coveted title of World Champions, with St Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band Tallaght, Co.Dublin hoping to defend their 2010 title.
The Road To The Worlds Tour showcases the intensive months of practice, fund-raising and journeys made by top pipe bands before they reach Glasgow.
Says Cottown Pipe Major Malcolm Wallace: “The World Pipe Band Championships is the highlight of our piping year. We’ve gone to Glasgow by sail, rail and this year - air! It’s always an exciting journey as the whole band is buzzing about competing against the very best bands across the globe once again.”
easyJet’s UK commercial manager, Ali Gayward said: “This month easyJet will celebrate 10 years of flying from Belfast International Airport to Glasgow…and it is therefore quite a fitting tribute to have our passengers piped onto the aircraft! This route is extremely popular with Northern Ireland passengers and we look forward to welcoming Cottown Pipe Band on board and wish all the competitors good luck at The Worlds”.
Adds Ian Embelton, the Chief Executive of the RSPBA: “We look forward to extending some warm Glaswegian hospitality to our friends from Northern Ireland once again this year. Every band’s Road To The Worlds involves a lot of practice, a lot of hard work and a lot of travel so it is always exciting to see what the results will be!”
The World Pipe Band Championships are organised by Glasgow Life on behalf of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) and offers the most prestigious 1st place title in the pipe band world. Staged in the centre of Glasgow the event attracts 40,000 spectators each year and also hosts children’s activities, a global food village and much more.
